GENERAL

What is the San Francisco GAA?

The San Francisco Gaelic Athletic Association (SFGAA) is the governing body for Gaelic games in the USGAA Western Division. We organize competitions and promote the sports of Gaelic football, ladies Gaelic football, hurling, and camogie among local and international players.

Where is the San Francisco GAA located?

Our headquarters and pitches are located at Pairc na nGael on Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay.

How can I get involved?

We welcome players of all skill levels, coaches, referees, and volunteers. You can reach out via our website, Instagram, or Facebook to learn more about joining a club or supporting the organization.

"To win just once would be enough."

Games & Competitions

What sports are played in the San Francisco GAA?

We organize leagues and tournaments for Gaelic football, hurling, and camogie, with divisions for men and women.

When does the season start?

The season typically runs from April to August, with league matches leading up to championship finals. Check our fixtures and results to see when games are on.

Do I need to be Irish to play?

Not at all! While Gaelic games have deep Irish roots, they are open to everyone and many Bay Area athletes have discovered Gaelic sports. We encourage people from all backgrounds to get involved.

How can I find a team to join?

Visit our website’s club directory to find a team near you.

How are Gaelic sports scored?

In Gaelic football, hurling, and camogie, scoring is done using a goal and point system. A ball sent over the crossbar between the uprights earns one point, while a ball sent under the crossbar into the net earns a goal, which is worth three points. Scores are recorded in a goals-points format (e.g., 2-10 means 2 goals and 10 points, totaling 16 points).

"It’s the team that matters most. Individual awards are great, but they mean nothing unless the team succeeds."

Henry Shefflin

Training & Equipment

Do I need experience to join?

No prior experience is necessary. Our clubs provide training and coaching to help new players learn the games.

What equipment do I need?

Unlike other contact sports, Gaelic sports are played with a minimum of protective gear. For Gaelic football, you’ll need cleats. For hurling and camogie, you will also need a helmet and a hurley. Clubs often provide equipment for beginners.

Where do training sessions take place?

Most clubs hold their own training sessions and locations can vary. Contact a club for specific training locations and times.

"You don’t play for yourself alone. You play for your family, your club, your county, and for all who came before you."

Events & Community

Does the SF GAA organize social events?

Yes! To bring the community together, we host social gatherings, fundraisers, and cultural events throughout the year, frequently at the United Irish Center.

Can I support the SF GAA without playing?

Absolutely! We are always looking for referees, volunteers, sponsors, and supporters. Attending matches and events is a great way to be part of the community.

How can I stay updated on SFGAA news?

Follow us on Instagram, Facebook, or subscribe to our newsletter for game updates, events, and news.

“Great teams aren’t just about skill—they’re about heart, determination, and a willingness to leave everything on the pitch.”
