2023 St Patricks Day Cup Finals
The 2023 St Patricks Day league came to an end last Sunday, June 4th, which saw 3 winners - Fog City Harps, Sean Treacys, and Tipperary SF.
Fog City Harps and Clan Na Gael started the day off with the Ladies Football final. The intense work rate on the pitch was not truly reflected in the final score, and both clubs gave it their all for the full 60 minutes. Fog City edged forward in the first 20 minutes with a couple of goals, while Clan Na Gael pushed hard to close the gap, they were unsuccessful come the final whistle, and Fog City Harps took home a hard earned cup.
Next up were Sean Treacys and defending 2022 champions, Ulster Club SF. The game started off as a toe to toe battle between the clubs, and with little between them, the first half ended on a score line of 1 goal (UC) to 5 points (ST). However, Sean Treacys dug deep and came out of the second half with a 10 point lead and our 2023 Paddys Day cup winners.
Tipperary SF and Na Fianna closed the day with an exciting battle between the two clubs. The first half proved difficult for Na Fianna, and Tipperary seemed to widen the gap between them every few minutes with points being scored from all over the pitch. Two impressive goals came fast from Tipperary, ending the first half with a 15 point lead.
Never the less, Na Fianna came out in the second half strong and closed the gap with an impressive come back. They came within two points of Tipperary with minutes left, but were unable to push over the line as time ran out. Tipperary finished off with two last minute points, which saw a finishing score line of 2-17 to 19 points.
All in all, SFGAA saw one of its largest Paddys Day Cup home base numbers in a few years. With 140+ players between all 6 clubs on the day, it’s encouraging to see GAA thriving the Western Division yet again. Congratulations to the winning clubs, and we look forward to some exciting games in the summer ahead!
